Living music for theatre
Composing for theatre is not writing a soundtrack. It's entering a living process.
Actors respond to the music. The music responds to the actors. Each performance is different — like jazz, like improvisation. The score is only a starting point, never a destination.
An interactive process
Working with theatre companies is built on exchange. The music doesn't arrive after the show: it grows with it, in rehearsal, in dialogue with the staging, the bodies, the text.
It's a compositional practice that keeps the fragility and liveliness of the live moment.
Pedro Melenas y otras historias para desobedientes
A theatrical cabaret for young audiences, adapted from the German book Der Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffmann (1845) — ten cautionary tales in verse where disobedient children face darkly comic consequences.
Directed by Artus Chávez and Froylán Tiscareño, produced by 25 Producciones and La Caja de Teatro. Premiered at Teatro del Bosque Julio Castillo (Centro Cultural del Bosque, Mexico City) in 2022.
Deborah composed the original score — work recognised with the Premio Metropolitano de Teatro 2022 for best original musical composition.
Adiós Carlota
Silent puppet theatre with live piano. The story of the love and suffering between Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg and Empress Carlota, during her final days of mental decline.
Created and directed by Artus Chaves and Gerardo Ballester. Hyperrealistic puppets, no dialogue — the story is told through movement, image, and music.
Deborah composed and performed the live piano score, drawing the audience into Carlota's dreamlike world. Presented at Foro Shakespeare and the Museo Nacional de Historia (Castillo de Chapultepec), Mexico City, 2013–2014.
Experimental projects
Beyond cinema and theatre, Deborah pursues a freer sonic exploration — extended techniques, piano preparation, pushing the limits of the instrument.
These explorations feed all other projects. What is discovered in experimentation eventually infuses the film accompaniments, the theatrical compositions, the stage work.
Film composition
Deborah also composes original music for cinema — documentaries, short films, independent films.
This work has been recognised on several occasions, notably with the Premio Metropolitano for best original music and the best music award at the Pantalla de Cristal festival.
